Widely acclaimed as launching the Third Wave Ska revival the Toasters went on to form the famous Moon Records label and kick-started the careers of dozens of bands. Their early collaborations with the iconic Joe Jackson helped define their sound and establish them as the premier USA ska act of their generation. The Toasters have been hailed as “ska pioneers” (Billboard magazine) and the “sound of NYC” (New York Times). \nThe band is currently supporting their latest single: “House of Soul”\, released on their own label Megalith Records and released only in a 7 inch vinyl format. Online ticket sales stop at 6 p.m. and tickets will be available at the door unless noted otherwise. \nFlamingo Cantina is thrilled to welcome back Grimy Styles for their DISTERIA record release party as they throw down the very best in all instrumental dub reggae. Two ticket options available. $15 for general admission or $25 for admission + a vinyl copy of their new album DISTERIA (includes digital download card) to be distributed at show. \nGrimy Styles recorded “Disteria” at Cacophony Recorders by Erik Wofford (Black Angels\, M. Ward) in a traditional ‘live take’ directly to tape. Instead of focusing on overdubs and post production\, each member utilizes their own ‘dub’ effects workstation\, which is processed live during the take. \nOn top of the studio mics\, the drummer rigs a separate mic setup which he then manipulates through a side mixer with echo\, reverb and filter processors. He often can be seen playing one handed\, as he reaches over to activate pedals or send ‘reverb splashes’. The concept is for the four members to meld this amalgamation of effects into a cohesive syncopated Dub journey. \nIn a departure from the traditional reggae songwriting intrinsic to Jamaican Dub\, Grimy Styles draws inspiration from many artists spanning from Pink Floyd to Slayer and Astor Piazzola to U2. Classically inspired melodica and guitar drive melodies while drum and bass point back to the fundamental rhythm of King Tubby and Lee Scratch Perry. \nGrimy Styles took their unique live show to the four corners of the continental USA following the release of their debut studio record “Rewind”. They have been featured on The Future Sound of Reggae Vol. 1; compiled with Capleton\, Sizzla and Luciano on Gibbo Records; and worked with DJ Rapid Ric\, Chalie Boy and Mr Blakes on The Return of the Versatyle Child Mixtape.

DESCRIPTION:Powered by Eventbrite\n\n\n\nThe Meditations – Ansel Cridland\, Danny Clarke and Winston Watson collectively known as “The Meditations”\, recorded their first hit single “Woman is Like a Shadow” in 1974 at Channel One Recording Studio; followed by “Tricked”\, “Babylon Trap Them”\, “Woman Piaba” and “Running from Jamaica” which were included on their first album Message from The Meditations produced by Dobby Dobson. Among other albums were Wake Up\, Guidance\, No More Friend\, For the Good of Man\, Reggae Crazy\, The Return of The Meditations and Ghetto Knowledge.\n\n \nThe groups’ vocal and harmony style captured the hearts of reggae fans around the world and led to the collaboration of work with Lee Scratch Perry. Scratch\, who produced for Bob Marley and the Wailers\, asked them to do back up vocals for “Funky Reggae Party”\, featuring Bob on lead vocals. Bob Marley was so pleased with their harmony that he went in search for the group to do more back up vocals for him. He found Danny Clarke\, one of the groups members\, and put him in a taxicab and said\, “Me nuh wan you come back til you find the other two members.”  The taxi driver drove Danny to all the studios in Kingston and could not find the other members\, until they drove to Idlers Rest\, a street where all musicians and singers mostly hang out. When Danny saw Ansel and gave him the news that Bob Marley wanted the group to do back up vocals for him\, Ansel thought it was a joke. Still\, he and Winston joined Danny in the taxi\, which took them to the studio where they added their vocals to “Rastaman Live Up” and “Blackman Redemption”. \n \n \nThey have subsequently toured the United States and Europe. In 2015 they released the album Jah Always Find a Way\, which featured Sly Dunbar (drums)\, Lloyd Parks (bass)\, Ansel Collins and Sidney Mills (keyboards)\, Dwight Pinkney and Willie Lindo (guitars)\, and Derrick Barnett (bass).  As of 2016 the group comprises Cridland\, Laury Webb\, and Drayton Chandell.\n \nDoors open at 9 p.m.  Local reggae outfit Music4Life opens the show.  Music4Life features some of Austin’s most beloved reggae musicians\, including Dj RJ\, Phillipedon White (of Liberation/Raggamassive fame)\, Alan Moe Monsarrat (Mau Mau Chaplains)\, Jeremy Carlson\, Dane Foltin and James Campbell (all of Lion Heights).  Winston’s Kitchen will be on hand with delicious Caribbean fare.\n\n \nAfter online ticket sales end\, tickets will be available at 9 p.m. at the door.
