SUMMARY:Skyzoo + Elzhi: Retropolitan Tour
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Nov. 10\n8pm – 12am\, Ages 21+ \nRetropolitan Tour starring\nSkyzoo (Brooklyn\, NY)\nElzhi (Detroit\, MI)\n+ tour support; Landon Wordswell\, 60 East\, Philmore Greene\n& special guests: Nick Cruz w/ Ruler Why? \nBUY TICKETS \n$10 Early Bird Special\n$15 General Admission\n$20 Day Of Show\nJoin the event on FB Here! \nWe are proud to welcome the Retropolitan Tour to Austin\, TX on Nov. 10 @ the historic Flamingo Cantina\, starring Skyzoo & Elzhi + tour support by Landon Wordswell\, 60 East\, Philmore Greene\, DJ Chip Deville! \n \n \nAbout Skyzoo: When rumors spread months ago that Skyzoo had begun working on a collaborative project with the iconic Pete Rock it quickly set social media aflame. While details were scant\, Mello Music Group is happy to finally reveal the details and officially announce Skyzoo & Pete Rock’s new album\, Retropolitan\, with Billboard who premiered the lead single It’s All Good. \nIt’s All Good finds Skyzoo skating over a beat from Pete’s secret “SP-1200 stash\,” and this one in particular was produced in 1994 around the same time as Pete’s Illmatic sessions with Nas. \nRetropolitan includes 12-tracks\, all produced by Pete Rock\, with features from Styles P\, Benny The Butcher\, Conway\, Westside Gunn\, Elzhi\, and Raheem DeVaughn. \nIt is more than an album of beats. & rhymes. It’s two generations of legendary native New Yorkers putting it down and pulling no punches. Skyzoo & Pete Rock use this album to create a love letter and a wakeup call to the city\, as they have witnessed its culture stripped away layer-by-layer. \nAbout Elzhi: Before the world ever heard the name Elzhi\, the young artist was sitting in the back of classrooms thinking of rhymes and spitting verses\, while his friend Fes banged out beats on lunchroom tables and battled rival emcees on the blacktop after school. He sharpened every blade in his arsenal\, developing his style to measure up against the competition in Maurice Maloneis Hip Hop Shop\, the legendary proving ground for Detroit Artists that has produced some of the greatest emcees in the world. Elzhi spent years paying dues\, writing songs\, entering battles\, and recording demos until he made his international debut on Come and Get It\, a standout track from J Dilla’s album\, Welcome 2 Detroit. The critically acclaimed song drew massive attention to the mysterious artist\, and made his EP\, Out of Focus\, highly sought after. Following that\, he released the critically acclaimed Elmatic as a tribute to Nas as well as to Elzhi’s hometown of Detroit. in 2016 he released his long awaited album “Lead Poison”. Be on the lookout for a new Elzhi album in 2020.

SUMMARY:The Skatalites\, Micah Shalom\, Kung Fu Soundsystem: NIGHT 2
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS FOR NIGHT 2 (SATURDAY 11.09) HERE\n\n\n\n\n\nJamaican ska pioneers\, The Skatalites return to Flamingo Cantina for two nights of performances! 2019 marks their 55th anniversary. Micah Shalom and Kung Fu Soundsystem open the show.\n\n\n\n\nAdvance tickets are $20; ticket sales stop at 6 p.m. day of show; remaining tickets will be $25 cash at the door. Come hungry\, Winston’s Kitchen will be serving up delicious Caribbean food! \n\nJoin the event on FB here. \n\n \nThe original members of the Skatatlies performed on hundreds of recording sessions before forming the band in 1964. They backed most of the vocalists in Jamaica at that time\, including Bob Marley\, Toots and The Maytals\, Jimmy Cliff\, Alton Ellis\, Ken Boothe\, and many more. \nAfter disbanding in 1965\, the individual members continued playing in various groups as the music evolved from ska to rocksteady to reggae. In the late 70’s\, a resurgence of interest in the music began in the U.K. which caused the creation of many bands such as The Specials\, The English Beat\, Madness\, The Selecter\, and Bad Manners. This became known as the “Two-Tone era\,” and these British musicians fused rock music with the ska and reggae. \nIn The early 80’s\, the music started to spread to The U.S.A and other parts of the world\, and bands began to emerge everywhere playing different flavors of ska and reggae fused with whatever else they wanted to throw in\, including hard core\, jazz\, and even punk. In 1983\, The Skatalites reunited to play Reggae Sunsplash in Montego Bay and subsequently in London at The Crystal Palace for the U.K version of The Sunsplash event. \nA few years later\, they began emigrating to the U.S.A.\, and in 1986\, the first US shows began at The Village Gate in NYC. In 1989\, the band supported Bunny Wailer on The Liberation Tour\, and in 1990\, they embarked on their first headline tour of The U.S.A. and have not stopped touring the world ever since. The band is available for festivals and also plays in intimate club settings. Their unique infectious brand of real Jamaican ska pleases audiences of all ages across the globe year after year. “We hope you will enjoy listening to our music as much as we enjoy performing it for you.” \nForever indebted to the inspiration and talent of: Roland Alphonso\, Lloyd Brevett\, Tony DaCosta\, Rupert Dillon\, Don Drummond\, Joseph “Lord Tanamo” Gordon\, Jerome “Jah Jerry” Haynes\, Lloyd Knibb\, Tommy McCook\, Donat Roy “Jackie” Mittoo\, John “Dizzy Johnny” Moore\, Jackie Opel\, Doreen Shaffer\, Lester Sterling.

SUMMARY:Of Good Nature\, Lion Heights\, Bum Lucky
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE\nOf Good Nature (North Carolina)\, Lion Heights and Bum Lucky\nRoots+Rock+Reggae!\nJOIN THE EVENT ON FB HERE\n\n\n\n\nBased in Charlotte NC\, Of Good Nature\, has received quick attention to their newly released\, chart topping music. Reggae\, Pop\, Rock\, and Alternative are more popular descriptions of OGN’s fusion-friendly approach to today’s music\, but this group of prolific songwriters strive to explore a range of styles that have lead to a highly accessible sound. Brand new full length album “Timeless” debuted at #1 on iTunes and #3 on Billboard (Reggae Albums Chart) in March 2019. “Take Me Anywhere” has been featured on Sirius XM’s The Pulse\, “Feels Right” and “Good Life” are streamed on popular Spotify and Pandora playlists including Happy Songs For The Office\, Easy Like Sunday Morning\, and Reggae Summer Beach. \nCelebrating the successful release of “Timeless” the album\, Of Good Nature has announced their partnership with Ineffable Music Group based in Oakland CA. The band is set to already head back to the studio June 2019 with producer/engineer Danny Kalb (Beck\, Ben Harper\, Foster the People\, The Movement) at White Star Sound in Charlottesville\, VA. OGN also received recognition for their past studio work\, seeing their debut album\, Just Add Water\, won Indie-Ville’s Reggae Album of the Year and sophomore album Life Worth Livin\, debuted at #5 on iTunes Reggae Albums Charts. \nLion Heights – transplanted from Chicago\, LH has re-established their roots in Austin as one of the top Roots Reggae acts in Texas\, featuring Jeremy Carlson\, Dane Foltin\, James Campbell and Drae Wilson on drums. The group is mainly influenced by the roots music that was pumping out of Jamaica in the 60s and 70s. However\, combining aspects of soul and R&B helps them to introduce reggae music to new audiences. They have independently released one EP (Survival Of The Richest) and a handful of singles. Lion Heights released their first official single “Good One” which was distributed worldwide through label Rebel Sound. “Good One” has since been featured on radio shows all over the U.S. as well as Jamaica and the UK. In 2017\, the group released their first full-length record\, Same Situation\, which has been well-received locally and internationally. \n\nBum Lucky was born out of the desire to cultivate a distinguished reggae music scene in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Being located far from the beaches and pot-friendly atmospheres where the genre thrives forced the four-piece to dig deeper in its songwriting and sound — a welcome challenge that thrust the music new heights and enticed bands such as Fortune Youth and Tribal Seeds to play alongside Bum Lucky in their hometown. \nThe band’s latest EP\, Show Some Love\, is founded in roots-rock reggae and dub\, and tinged with elements from southern rock and blues. The result is a collection of songs as gritty as they are seductive — the music embodies a rebellious spirit that serves as both a call to action and remedy on the dancefloor. \nThis fresh approach has rewarded Bum Lucky opportunities to share the stage with bands such as the Original Wailers\, Lee Scratch Perry\, Katchafire\, Groundation\, the Expendables\, the Movement\, Sensamotion\, Mishka\, Tribal Seeds and Fortunate Youth\, among others. They’ve been guests at esteemed festivals throughout the Southwest while touring on a rigorous schedule the last several years to spread the gospel of good tunes.

SUMMARY:The Toasters\, Scotchbonnets\, The Roustabouts
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE\nDoors 8 p.m.\n \nIn their 37th year the Toasters are hitting the gas\, not the brakes. With an international all-star line-up their whirlwind global tour continues unabated across the continents with performances scheduled in Costa Rica\, Hong Kong (HK International Ska Festival) and Estonia (Live Nation Showcase at Tallinn Music Week). The band also returns to Japan\, China\, Russia\, Hawaii\, South America and Mexico on top of regular touring in the USA and Europe playing over 60 shows in 24 countries from Sweden to Bulgaria.\n\n\n\n\n\nFormed on the Lower East Side of NYC in 1981 the band is the longest running US SKA formation. They bridge the gap between England’s 2-Tone movement and the American Ska explosion of the 90’s which they are rightfully credited with starting. During the 3rd Wave Ska revival The Toasters formed the famous Moon Records label and kick-started the careers of dozens of bands.\n\n\n\n\n\n“In my opinion\, The Toasters are to ska in America the 1980s and beyond what The Specials were to ska in the U.K. in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s\, and what the Skatalites were to ska in Jamaica in the 1960s. The Toasters were innovators\, creators\, shapers of the music\, evolving it in a fresh direction\, blending it with the cultural influences in a very American manner\, and I mean that in a completely complimentary way. Just as Byron Lee & the Dragonaires brought professionalism and polish to ska\, allowing others to benefit from the fruits of their labor\, so too did the Toasters’ music allow numerous other bands to share in the spotlight of skill and success\, many of whom have gone on to great heights. Upon the shoulders of giants.\n\n\nOh\, yeah\, and they kick ass! “-Heather Augustyn\,\n\n\nAuthor of SKA \, An Oral History\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Scotch Bonnets – Punky reggae rockers from Baltimore – whose infectious energy keeps the party jumping all night\, the crew is fearlessly lead by singer-guitarist Kristin Forbes aka Lady Hatchet.\n\n\nThe Roustabouts open up with their unique brand of ska/punk/reggae.

SUMMARY:Through the Roots\, Pacific Dub\, Salt Water Slide
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE\nhttp://flamingocantina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2019.09.29_AUSTIN.H264.mp4\nThrough the Roots – 12:00AM\nPacific Dub – 10:30PM\nSalt Water Slide – 9:30PM\nDoors 9 p.m.\, $15 (cash) \nJOIN THE EVENT ON FB HERE! \nThrough The Roots:\nFrom what was once a dream inspired by close friends\, to humble beginnings filled with living room jams\, late nights writing songs in the garage\, backyard houseparties and countless complaints from neighbors\, San Diego-based reggae/rock band Through The Roots was born. \nBy coincidence in early 2008\, Evan Hawkins and Taylor Boatwright met at a local guitar center. It was there that Evan shared his vision with Taylor\, which eventually led to the beginning of TTR. \nEvan and Taylor came from different musical backgrounds but shared some similar musical tastes\, and both were very moved by reggae. They believed TTR would provide them with the perfect vehicle to spread their message and adopted a Cali reggae/rock concept. \nIn late 2008\, Through the Roots added Brady O’Rear to round out the group’s core. He brought his own musical tastes\, complete with Hawaiian Islands reggae\, and mixed them with those of Evan’s and Taylor’s to give TTR a broader range of ideas and influences to draw from. \nThrough the Roots quickly moved from the streets and backyard shows to touring in 2010 and soon hooked up for West Coast and national tours with some of the reggae/rock genres top headliners. The San Diego band eventually added Corrick Watson (lead guitar/vocals) and Budda Foster (bassist/keys) from Los Angeles to the talented\, five-man mix. \nWith the band set\, Through the Roots looks forward to continue spreading its positive messages\, and showcasing its high energy shows to a growing legion of fans. \nPacific Dub\nComing from Surf City USA\, Pacific Dub resides in Huntington Beach which is nestled nicely in southern California’s Orange County. Other bands such as Korn\, The Offspring\, Avenged Sevenfold\, and The Dirty Heads all have members that call this surfer’s paradise home. \nCombining catchy chorus’s\, heavy rock n’ roll guitar melodies\, and smooth hip-hop and reggae rhythms are all significant characteristics that add to Pacific Dub’s coastal vibe\, and genuine objective of creating innovative alternative-rock-reggae while sharing a message of love and peace. \nFrom the entire Pacific Dub family\, we thank you for your continued support\, and look forward to releasing new music and seeing you at a show soon. \nSaltwater Slide\nSaltwater Slide is a San Antonio-based reggae/rock band that has quickly become a staple in both local and regional circles. Those who are familiar with their music are accustomed to their positive\, relatable lyrics\, high energy live performances\, and active contribution to their local community. You can catch the guys at their annual Reggae Beach Cleanup in Corpus Christi\, their band-managed Adopt-A-Spot on Mulberry road in San Antonio\, or at venues all throughout Texas and beyond. \nSaltwater Slide has been inspired by acts like Fortunate Youth\, Passafire\, The Expanders\, Arise Roots\, Iya Terra\, Tribal Seeds\, Dubbest\, Roots of a Rebellion\, Pepper\, The Skints\, Rebelution\, and more\, although their unique style is hard to miss and harder to forget.

Legends like Jimmy Cliff\, Sly and Robbie\, Philip Smart\, Willie Lindo and Gregory Isaac are a few of the people that Ansel has worked with. These contributions have sculpted the sound of Roots Rock Reggae over the years. Making The Meditations a fundamental and essential part of reggae music. \nOver the past few years Ansel (who has produced all of The Meditations’ albums excluding three) have been the only remaining original member of The Meditations to continue touring. Accompanying him for almost 10 years\, as background vocalist are Laury Webb(who is also featured on The Good Of Man album) and DaddyLion Chandell. Together\, they’ve been touring the United States performing for massive crowds at venues like the Red Rock Amphitheater twice in seven years. And returning in 2013\, to celebrate Reggae On The River 30th year anniversary. A festival first opened by The Meditations and The Itals. \nCriss crossing the United States year after year\, embarking on journeys over waters to Africa in an attempt to quench the thirst for Meditations Music. On January 29\, 2010 Ansel performed for exhilarated fans at The Parker Place(in Abidjan\, Ivory Coast)\, which due to the demand\, resulted in being two events instead of one. This amazing experience produced a great live album\, titled Ansel Meditations Live In Africa. This album is of legendary proportions to say the least. Its Roots Reggae at its finest. Its raw and filled with uncut material\, capturing a monumental moment in time. \nThere’s most definitely a thirst for Roots Rock Reggae and that authentic Meditations sound. It’s by no means new but it’s growing in volume with every generation. The love is overwhelming and it’s an inspiring experience to see The Meditations live.

SUMMARY:Capleton\, Roots from the Clay\, DJ Jah Bill
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE\n\nAdvance sales stop at 6 p.m. day of show.  Remaining tickets will be available at the door\, cash only.\n\n\nhttp://flamingocantina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/IMG_3241.mp4\n\n\nWhen Capleton first burst on the scene in the late 1980s\, the dancehall was a very different place than it is today. Slackness and gun talk were the order of the day. This bright promising newcomer announced his arrival with a string of hit songs from “Bumbo Red” to “Number One on the Look Good Chart” and “Lotion Man.” Everything he touched hit the sound-good charts\, and the youthful artist with the nimble vocabulary and hardcore voice quickly established himself as one of dancehall‚s most reliable hitmakers. But even he could not have predicted that eleven years later\, at the start of the new millennium\, he would be dancehall’s ruling voice. \n“I think the people dem see say me really deserve that because of the amount of years me put in\,” Capleton says\, “and we never really bow and we still hold the faith. We stand up for whatever we a say. Yeah and we really work for it. And them say by your works\, a so you get your pay. The people them see the amount of fight me face and the whole heap of accusation. And me still never give up” \nWhen he dropped the tune “Alms House” in 1992\, Capleton established himself as more than an entertainer but as a guiding light of righteousness through music. “United we stand and divided we fall\,” he sang for the benefit of his fans and dancehall comrades. “Nuff of them nah go know themself till them back against the wall.” A few years later he came back with yet another antidote to the clashing and rivlary that had taken hold of the dancehall business. “Music is a mission\,” he reminded his fellow artists\, “not a competition. Some man use the music to cause confusion.” The path of this dancehall Prophet was clearly established in 1994 with a string of songs that declared his newfound faith in Rastafari. “INI sight up the light and see say really\, yunno\, Rasta is real\,” he recalls. “founder of the world\, because Rasta did come set the trend. Y‚unnerstand. Rasta is life.” \nThe first words of his mega-hit “Dis The Trinity” made it plain that the DJ had experienced some kind of revelation. “I was once lost but now I‚m found\,” he stated\, “Selassie I live every time.” Capleton became a strong advocate of the teaching of the Jamaican National Hero\, Marcus Mosiah Garvey\, founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and advocate of universal black repatriation. “Babylon rewarded us with hatred for our love\,” he declares. “They taught us to rape\, steal and kill. For instance\, they stole our literature and taught it back to us in a different manner so as to infiltrate our minds with foolishness and other misconceptions. Now we as black men do not see ourselves as prince and prophets\, but as punks and guys. Our women do not see themselves as queens\, princesses or empresses anymore\, but as harlots and concubines.” The only solution\, as Bob Marley advocated\, is to emancipate oneself from mental slavery. \n“Over the years INI as a nation and a people\, them no really teach INI nuttin‚ bout INI black self. You know I mean? Them teach INI them give we European philosophy. So INI and some other youths a try emerge now\, we ask certain question and we ask fi certain things. Caw we know say an institute\, or in a college\, or in a certain organization we need we Ethiopian curriculum\, we need the black man thing. We need to know about weself. Becaw the prophet Marcus Garvey did show we say\, A nation without no knowledge of them own history is like a tree without a root. And if you don‚t know where you‚re coming from\, you‚re not gonna know where you‚re going.” \n\nEven as he uplifts the black race\, Capleton always makes a point of clarifying that he does not seek to alienate any race. “We are not being racial nor prejudiced star\,” he says. “Becaw we know Jah is for everyone. But where history and prophesy in concerned\, that is our witness and we have to be ourself\, and we cannot hide from the truth. Caw we woulda be a traitor and a sellout to ourself. And you cannot sell out yourself.”\n\nRoots from the Clay is a roots reggae band consisting of Jamaican musical duo Jermaine ‘Songo’ Wilson drummer extraordinaire and singer Aria Morgan-Wilson former solo artist based in Houston\, Texas

SUMMARY:Dubbest\, Bum Lucky
DESCRIPTION:THIS SHOW IS 18+ \nSince 2009\, Dubbest has been forging its own path through the heavily forested reggae landscape\, expertly infusing roots traditionalism with a refreshing improvisational savvy that calls to mind not only the studio experimentation of pioneering dub producers Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock and Lee “Scratch” Perry but also the real-time exploration of jam bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish. As friends in high school\, guitarist Andrew MacKenzie\, singer/melodica player Ryan Thaxter \, bassist Sean Craffey\, guitarist Cory Mahoney\, and drummer Kyle Hancock shared a love of pop-punk and ska\, bonding over bands like Black Flag\, until they caught wind of Augustus Pablo’s 1974 dub classic Ital Dub. This was the gamechanger that set the stage for their current musical approach: using introspective\, spacious bass and drum grooves to anchor a thickly-textured interplay of instruments\, vocals\, and timbres. With their third album\, Light Flashes\, Dubbest is poised for national recognition.
