The Itals were chiefly responsible for keeping the sound and spirit of roots reggae alive well into the dancehall era. They didn’t get as much attention as other great vocal trios from the roots era (Culture\, the Mighty Diamonds\, the Wailing Souls\, etc.)\, partly because their ’70s releases were confined to 45-rpm singles. When they finally made the leap to LPs in the ’80s\, they attracted highly positive notices from many reggae aficionados\, even despite the fact that roots was rapidly growing passé in Jamaica with the advent of dancehall reggae.

The legendary group dates back to the late 1960s. The Wailing Souls members got their start learning from reggae icon Joe Higgs in Jamaica’s Trench Town yards and sung alongside other emerging groups at the time including Bob Marley & The Wailers. By the ’70s The Wailing Souls attracted interest from preeminent reggae producer Coxson Dodd and began a fruitful recording career. Four decades later the group has amassed three Grammy nominations\, has been critically lauded for albums released by Island\, Tuff Gong and CBS Records and gained a widespread international following. \nThe Wailing Souls pushed the musical limits of the reggae genre with that release\, blending sounds of funk\, r&b\, and country into their roots tradition\, securing their reputations as pioneers in the genre. \nFusing the harmonies of Motown with the roots and dancehall sounds of reggae\, The Wailing Souls persist as one of the most powerful forces in Jamaican music. DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2003\, Foco De Atelier has been an amorphous cadre of Dallas transplants from Latin America\, Puerto Rico\, and South Asia. As of Mid-2013 however\, FDA has coalesced into a core group of 4 members who strive to bring their native musical roots and love merging it with contemporary rock and roll that both nods to their diverse backgrounds and the Texas upbringing that brings them together. \nLike many bands from Texas\, FDA have the privilege to get inspiration and influence from cultures both embedded in Americana and Modern Pop Music as well the well-established musical tastes south of the border. This allows the band to easily create music both in English and Spanish and create songs that are sandboxes for experimentation and enjoyment.

Residing in Texas they have picked up a few local members to hold down the drum and bass section. Influenced by a wide variety of music from R&B\, Hip Hop\, to World Music\, their four part harmonies and catchy choruses stand out and bring a unique experience to the stage. \nStraight out of the Sunshine State\, Kash’d Out hits the reggae/rock scene with style and ease. Inspired by music from Slightly Stoopid\, New Found Glory and 90’s R&B\, and experience working with Ballyhoo! and Tribal Seeds at Sound Lounge Studios\, Kash’d Out entered the flourishing reggae/rock scene with energy and drive. Fresh off of a nationwide tour with Pepper and Less Than Jake\, followed by another with Pacific Dub\, Kash’d Out doesn’t plan to stop touring anytime soon and we’re pleased to welcome them to the Cantina stage this August!

So when it came time for Wrekonize (rapper)\, Bernz (rapper) and company to name its second Strange Music album\, the group felt Believers best represented its progression for two reasons.\n“When it comes to our sound\, we have a lot of different things in it so a lot of times it’s hard to define\, but the one common thread is that as soon as people hear it\, they become Believers and it’s something that resonates with them\,” Bernz says. “On a more esoteric level\, we chose the title because we believe and the people we roll with believe that you ask the universe for things and you get them in return. You have to believe in what you want and believe it to achieve it.” \nDemrick\, formally known as Young De\, is a Recording Artist / Songwriter currently residing in Los Angeles\, California. He has a unique style of music\, both raw and soulful. “The songs I write are about my life\, friends\, family and people I’ve met along the way\, most of my inspiration comes from my everyday experiences.” He is best known for his collaborations with high profile artists such as Xzibit\, Kurupt\, Snoop Dogg\, Too $hort\, B-Real and Cypress Hill. DESCRIPTION:Cultural consciousness\, unity and celebratory dance are the ideals behind multicultural musical outfit ¡ESSO! Afrojam Funkbeat. The Chicago based ensemble perform a unique interfusion of Afro-Latin inspired compositions and jams. Influenced by the global troubadours and subversive thinkers of an emerging counterculture in the 70s and 80s\, the band pays homage to the traditional and progressive while taking their own step forward. \nThe rustic rhythms of Fela spiced with the textures of Fania blend with an improvisational ritual resembling the Funk Brothers; all from the streets that birthed house music. ¡ESSO! has experimental roots with live musicians setting the stage for soul singers\, “coro” group singing\, and poetic emcees. This platform has cemented into a diverse group finding an outlet at global street festivals and venues with an impassioned heart on its studied sleeve. \nWhat began as the house band for a live music night in downtown Chicago became a full band performing on the city’s global music scene. The cast of rotating members\, pieced together from various recording projects and bands\, changed from month to month until a solid foundation settled to host special guests and members. Co-founders\, Armando Pérez and Kevin Miller\, spearhead the group with a singular vision in focus. Both\, with notable Chicago bands\, Jugo de Mango and Suena Latin Jazz\, respectively\, bring experience and structure to the group. Along with an energetic pool of Djs\, producers\, organizers and bands of equal ilk\, ¡ESSO! (El Sonido Sonic Octopus) began playing shows with emerging local talent and established artists alike. \n¡ESSO! has performed with Ozomatli\, Natalia Lafourcade\, Cafe Tacuba\, Kinky\, Amigos Invisibles\, Saul Williams\, Bomba Estereo and more. \nBillii is an Indie Rock/Alt-Gaze/Art-Pup band\, created by Emmi Chen in Austin\, Texas\, in 2014. After skinning her knees with Ornery Little Darlings\, learning to fly solo\, and taking a double gulp of some kinda nutty tea out in the Texas hill country\, Emmi knew it was time to build a music machine. At the time with interests in the lives of Billie Holiday and Billy the Kid\, Emmi added the ‘i’ of her own name and created Billii\, which coincidentally has a sort of “party” meaning in a particular middle eastern language\, but really it’s all about that “third i”. Now in 2017\, after a 4 song EP and a Christmas single later\, Billii consists of a 4 piece band\, with Emmi Chen on vox and guitar\, Dan Goebel on guitar\, James Sargent on bass\, and Stefan Benteler on drums\, making Billii a well oiled machine with plans to record their first full length album in early 2018.
